Talking to Parents - Drugs/Drinking

Looking for a way to initiate a conversation with another parent about teen drug or alcohol use? Try this: Last weekend my son was at a party where kids were drinking. He didn't drink any, but I was really upset that this happened at another friend's home. Do you think I should I talk to the friend's parents?

REACH PARENTS WHERE THEY SHOP

Trying to keep the refrigerator stocked for hungry teens equals many trips to the grocery store. Here are some ideas to reach parents in high-traffic areas such as grocery stores or large retail chains like Wal-Mart and Target. Because parents will be in a hurry and "on the go," the information provided must be simple and easy to grab with minimal explanation. This type of program can be as simple as posting flyers at the check-out stands or staffing a table outside the store for a few hours.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

Place display stands on check-out stands with campaign flyers.
Print an ad on the back of grocery store receipts (check to see if the store will donate this space on the receipt).
Partner with a local grocery store to print a special order of grocery bags (print this site and tips for parents).
Partner with a store on its weekly newspaper inserts - add campaign flyer in weekly produce leaflet or coupon book.
Host an information table outside a store to distribute information on the campaign and include a drawing - such as a free spa certificate or restaurant certificate (donation) - to entice people to visit the table. Include tip sheets for people to take with them.
